It's always an event when Daryl favors us with a new album. On this one she's in a New Orleans state of mind. It's memorable when out of the rubble of "Katrina" something as beautiful like this uplifting, rewarding, significant CD appears. Recorded in 2005 around the "Katrina" devastation, Daryl, in her very own way, brings out joy where there are many painful memories. It's a feel good session with many many highlights. There's a song written by Daryl about a friend of ours, the well-known Audiophile producer Wendell Echols, called "Wendell's Cat". Daryl, playing her piano, sings her very sad tale about one single animal. Listening to this I am reminded of so many of the other animals affected by the hurricane and it's aftermath. It's a most thoughtful and serious piece of music. And then there's "Eloise" (Dave Frishberg). It is a sad tale about the after effect of human heartfelt losses. The vocal of "Moon River" (Mancini/Mercer) is a shining example of her classy perfection. You will never forget her extraordinary dramatic version. The 14 songs Daryl had chosen to sing here is certainly a proper musical memorial to the trials that affected New Orleans.
